Choosing a dive computer

A dive computer tracks depth and time and calculates your no-decompression limits as you dive. Recreational models handle air and nitrox on one gas; technical models add multiple gases, trimix and closed-circuit modes.

A water rating alone does not make a watch a dive computer. Every model here has a dive mode and a stated depth rating. Check the decompression model and gas support against the diving you plan to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a smartwatch as a dive computer?

Only if it has a proper dive mode with decompression tracking. A watch rated 10 ATM is fine for snorkelling but not for scuba.

What's the difference between single-gas and multi-gas?

Single-gas computers track one breathing gas per dive, usually air or nitrox. Multi-gas computers let you switch gases during a dive, which technical divers need.

What does an apnea mode do?

It tracks freediving on a single breath: depth, dive time and surface intervals. It isn't made for scuba, which needs a dive computer that handles decompression.
